Hilary Kay, who has made several appearances on the popular TV programme Antiques Roadshow, recently travelled to Australia to deliver a presentation about Wedgwood, a ceramicist born in the 18th Century.
The antiques expert, lecturer and author went to deliver a talk, titled ‘I Will Surprise the World with Wonders’, to the Australian Decorative & Fine Arts Society Mugdee.
Hilary Kay admits that she isn’t a huge fan of ceramics, but was interested by Wedgwood and his history. The British expert prefers mechanical antiques, having been raised in a family of engineers.
Wedgwood’s influence in the industrial revolution was the reason that Kay initially became interested in the potter. At the start of the last decade, Kay was asked to produce and deliver a documentary detailing Wedgwood’s life. As she ploughed through the materials made available for research, Kay became fascinated with him. She confirmed that the title of her lecture is a quote from the man himself, adding that Wedgwood did indeed surprise the world. Wedgwood was responsible for introducing an important formula for marketing during the 1700s.
Antiques are fascinating and experts discover so much information about the people who made antique furniture or other items. Reputable antiques dealers in Cumbria are often able to provide a wealth of information regarding the items they stock and those who made them. Hilary Kay’s lecture has enjoyed great success, with observers noting how she delivers with passion about her subject, just as so many antiques experts do.
