Former stars of Coronation Street Thelma Barlow and Anne Reid were the main attraction recently, as they took over Penkridge auction house while featuring on TV show Celebrity Antiques Road Trip. Thelma Barlow, who was Mavis Riley on the soap, and Anne Reid, the first wife of Ken Barlow, had purchased their antiques and wanted them to sell for higher prices. Finally, the pair took over the auction and gave an impromptu performance to the crowd.
With more than 200 people at the auction, Thelma and Anne demonstrated some of their purchases, including an accordion dating back to the late 19th Century, which Thelma tried to play. The pair demonstrated their knowledge of Downtown Abbey as they sold a Georgian tea set. The audience loved the banter and the bids increased significantly, pushing up the final value of the items.
The two ex-Corrie stars have been good friends for many years, following their appearance on Dinnerladies, a comedy by Victoria Wood. The Celebrity Antiques Road Trip episode will be shown this November and has raised money for the BBC’s charity Children in Need. Anne and Thelma are both too busy to watch the soap themselves, as they both have hectic lives.
People searching for antiques wouldn’t usually expect to see stars of Coronation Street enjoying a spot of banter while selling antiques. Those who are searching for antique furniture at an antiques store may discover items like antique chests in the Lancashire area, where there are plenty of experts to guide you.
