From 9th to 19th June, the winning entries for the Country Life LAPADA Object of the Year Awards will be on display at the Olympia Fine Art & Antiques Fair in London. Two-thirds of the 30-item shortlist comprises antique furniture – including a rare antique chest-on-chest, dated 1750.

Preston and Cumbria residents have until June 3rd to cast their vote in the Country Life and LAPADA Object of the Year awards. The Peoples Vote is a new category which allows members of the public to vote online for their favourite piece out of 30 shortlisted items. Antiques Traders Gazette, the trade magazine for the antiques industry, recently erupted in anger over the TV program Antiques Road Show. Subscribers vented their fury over the high discounts offered by traders to the show’s contestants, which can see over 50% wiped off the price of an antique chest in Lancashire . An early Georgian bureau cabinet desk has been sold for £120,000 (£140,000 with premium) at Hall’s Auctioneers in Shrewsbury. Similar in style to the lacquered secretaire antique desks sometimes seen in Preston dealers, but with a cabinet in place of enclosed bookshelves, the company said it was the finest piece of antique furniture they had seen in over a (more…)
