Ribble Valley residents will be cheered to know that TV antiques expert Eric Knowles is so in touch with the area he was born in that he even supports Burnley Football Club – otherwise known as the Clarets.
Burnley FC was founded back in 1882, so it is hardly surprising that Eric, who is 60 this year, is an expert on things like Victorian oak partners desks . A Lancashire lad who hails from the mill town of Nelson, in the Ribble Valley, he has fond recollections of the area where he grew up – even though he and his wife now live in Buckinghamshire. In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Eric revealed that one of his most treasured possessions is a wooden gavel his father had made for him from a laburnum tree that once stood in the garden of his childhood home. Possibly even more precious is the Clarets football scarf Eric was given by the ex-chairman of the club, Barry Kilby. He explained:
“Burnley are my tribal team.”
A regular on Antiques Roadshow for over 30 years, Eric’s specialist field is ceramics, although he is also an expert on antique furniture such as Victorian balloon back dining chairs . Ribble Valley residents may recall his TV programme Restoration Roadshow, in which Eric and his team of restorers saved everything from antique dining tables to silver jugs from the scrapheap.
Eric is currently busy touring with his one-man show, Antique Antics, which on 11th March will be at the Lowther Pavilion, Lytham St Annes. In Lancashire, Victorian Oak Pedestal Desks and a whole range of other period furniture can be found at local antiques dealers.
