Downton Abbey, the popular period drama, has not only captured the nation’s hearts, but has encouraged a revival of interest in antique furniture. The interior design on the set of Downton Abbey has created a resurgence of all things vintage. An expert from The Antiques Roadshow, Judith Miller believes that antiques were already enjoying a new found popularity, but the series has further boosted interest.
Miller says that the enthusiasm displayed for antiques and vintage items is part of a longing to create the warmth and security of the past. Past times are perceived as being full of order, obedience and security which people are trying to recreate. Although the story line of the drama series is captivating, antique furniture also provides interest, with a history which has developed over the years. Each piece of antique furniture has a tale to tell.
According to Miller it is possible to recreate the style of the Edwardian era, with a few antique pieces, even mixing old and new to reflect the latest trend. She said:
“This was such diverse era for style because it reflected all sorts of influences, from Victorian and Art Nouveau, to Arts and Crafts or more delicate Sheraton-style pieces, with painted or marquetry effects. There really is something to appeal to everyone.”
It is possible to recreate an Edwardian style room with just a few pieces which can be found in reputable antiques shops. Searching for Arts and Crafts furniture and Victorian dining chairs in the Lancashire area will help you create a room based on the style from Downton Abbey.
