Sophie Ellis Bextor was spotted shopping for antiques in Baildon recently, along with her mother Janet Ellis. Although it may have seemed like an innocent spot of shopping between mum and daughter, it was actually the finale of a battle between the pair to see who can raise the most money for charity.

Pop singer Sophie Ellis Bextor and her mum Janet, who used to present Blue Peter, had been filming for Celebrity Antiques Road Trip and were searching for antiques that would raise as much money as possible at auction. The items selected were auctioned recently at an auction house on Otley Road.

Over the last few weeks, Sophie and her mum have travelled the UK in search of antiques, accompanied by antique experts from the TV show.

The programme focuses on celebrity pairs competing against each other to discover unusual antiques. Any proceeds made through auction are donated to Children in Need. Although the owner of the auction house had published a statement on his website that said filming would be taking place at the venue, many people there on the day were surprised when Sophie and Janet walked in.

While antique auctions do often see interesting objects put up for sale, a buyer’s premium is typically in place on all items, from jewellery to antique chests. This means more is paid for items bought at auction than any purchased at a reputable antiques dealer.
