Antique mahogany pedestal desks , Open Bookcases and other Gillows pieces will get a particularly warm glow this December, when Tatton Park and the Judges Lodging House host their Victorian Christmas events.
Tatton Hall, near Knutsford in Cheshire, has one of the finest Gillows collections in the world, and in December, visitors can take a trip back in time and see Gillows’ antique bookcases, desks and cabinets in their original setting, as Tatton becomes a Dickensian Christmas Mansion. This year celebrates the 200th anniversary of Dickens’ birth, and each of the staterooms will be individually decorated to reflect this, so a visitor from Lancashire may see an antique oak pedestal desk adorned with quills and inkwell, or an antique bookcase of Dickensian folios.
References from A Christmas Carol and other works will be interlaced with the rich scent of Tatton Park greenery from the magnificent swags and garlands, while below stairs scullery maids will prepare Victorian sweetmeats and other delicacies for the festive table. While Bob Cratchit and his family make merry around their antique dining table, Preston visitors can learn how to make their own traditional decorations, listen to live music from local performers, or enjoy readings from Dickens’ books.
The Judges Lodging House is also holding a Victorian Christmas – and also has a fine collection of Gillows antique marquetry furniture. This Lancashire museum is located close to where Gillows had their workshops, so join them on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th December for parlour games, yuletide crafts, food and entertainment.
In Preston, a Victorian oak partners desk or antique balloon back dining chair from a local antique dealer brings warmth to any Christmas home.
