The Horley Lions Antique Valuation Day will be celebrating its 50th year at a fundraising event on 27th October. People living in the East Surrey area are being asked to search in their attics for anything that may be a hidden treasure. Catherine Southon and Mark Stacey will be available for the appraisal. The two antiques experts have previously appeared on TV shows, including Flog It! and Bargain Hunt.
When the experts have appeared on the popular antiques shows, they have often given a surprise valuation to unsuspecting owners. It is hoped that the people of Redhill, Horley and Reigate will receive a similar service. Over the previous years, it is estimated that the Horley Lions club has raised around £750,000 for charity and the members hope that the fundraising appraisal will raise even more money. Each person can present up to five items to be valued and will pay a £5 entry fee.
All the money raised on the day will be presented to local charities. Other events held by the club include an annual dog show, the Father Christmas sleigh, a weekly book stall, a horse show, skittles tournament and a BBQ bar.
Many of the people who sell their treasures will do so at auction. As auction houses take a commission the starting price will usually be higher, resulting in more for the seller. However, if a collector is looking for an item like an antique desk, they will find items at a reputable antiques dealer for a much lower price.
