Michael Flatley, the star of the hit theatre show “Lord of the Dance”, is selling the contents of his Castlehyde home in County Cork, Ireland. Among the items for sale are Renaissance paintings, suits of armour and antique furniture.
Over 700 items are being sold, including a large amount of 18th and 19th century furniture. The most expensive item is a Hannibal Lecter mask that was worn by actor Anthony Hopkins in the film “Silence of the Lambs”, which is signed by Hopkins and actress Julianne More. It is estimated to be worth between €80,000 and €120,000.
Many items are a lot more affordable than the Hannibal mask. An Irish masonic sword is worth around €30 to €50. A full suite of armour costs between €1,000 to €1,500, and a half suit between €500 to €800.
Flatley bought the Castlehyde Estate for around €4 million 21 years ago, and it is thought that he spent €30 million refurbishing it. The property went on the market in 2018 with an asking price of €12.5 million. It dates from 1760 and has seven reception rooms, 12 bedrooms and a swimming pool.
You don’t have to go to Ireland to find fine 18th and 19th century furniture. Whether you are looking for an antique desk, chair or cabinet, Lancashire dealers have a wide selection of items. However, you are unlikely to find a Hannibal Lecter mask, no matter how much you are prepared to pay for it.
