A jewellery and antiques event held at Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel turned out to be extremely enjoyable for one man, after specialists explained that his military memorabilia could be worth much more than he thought.
The man attended the event with a number of items, only to be told that at least one piece from the collection is worth around €1 million. Details of the individual and his memorabilia can’t be released for security reasons.
The company that organised the event will be sending an expert to visit the gentleman and give a personal appraisal.
According to Nigel Blackburn, one of the valuers at the event, the team spoke to more than 200 people at the appraisal. Blackburn has made appearances on some of the popular TV shows like ‘Cash in the Attic’ and ‘Flog It!’. Speaking to a journalist from the Irish Independent, Blackburn said:
“One chap had a collection of military items, but we will be flying an expert over from England to go see him personally. It may be worth in excess of at least €1 million.”
The company responsible for the appraisal event had made offers to buy many of the items it saw, with an offer of €60,000 for a diamond ring being turned down by the owner.
People very often don’t realise what an antique is worth, especially everyday items like furniture. Antiques dealers in Lancashire are happy to display a number of fine pieces, including antiques chests that may have been used to store memorabilia.
