A remembrance service was held on Sunday 2nd September for TV antiques expert David Barby, who passed away in July following a short illness.
An expert on everything from Victorian porcelain to antique oak pedestal desks , even Cumbrians who would otherwise switch channels when Bargain Hunt came on would warm to David, who first started taking an interest in antiques when he was just 12 years old. One of the most popular and longest-serving members of the Bargain Hunt team, David was also in the very first episode of Flog It! He had just recorded an episode of Celebrity Antiques Road Trip, with actor John Barrowman, when he became ill. He died in a Coventry hospital a short while later, aged just 69.
David, who lived with his wife Jane, continued running his antiques valuation firm until his death, and his website is being maintained in his memory. The service of thanksgiving, to which all were welcome to attend, was held at the suitably historic church of St Andrew’s. Dating from the 14th Century, it was the original parish church for Rugby.
Fittingly, the BBC has also chosen to pay tribute to this most lovable of antiques experts with a week of programmes beginning 1st October. Featuring David at his most flamboyant and acerbic, it includes brand new, previously unseen footage. David and his antique desk appraisals will be remembered with affection by both viewers and those in the trade – including antique dealers in Lancashire.
