A collection of dolls will be sold at auction in July, currently belonging to Jo Wood, the ex wife of Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones.
The auction will be handled by an auction house which specialises in toys, Vectis Auctions in Stockton on Tees. The Rachel Karslake Devon Doll Museum Collection consists of a number of pieces found over the last few decades. The collection comprises dolls houses, bisque dolls and dolls clothes, miniatures, books, furniture, teddy bears and other items. The toys were collected by Jo Wood’s mother, Rachel Karslake, who left the toys to Jo and her sister Lize Carron.
According to a spokesperson for Vectis, the collection is an indication of how much Rachel loved dressmaking and sewing. The spokesperson added that Karslake had made her children’s clothes, and in the early stages of Jo’s modelling career, had made dresses and bikinis for her to wear.
The collection comprises items which were secured after hours pouring over the catalogues of London auction houses and visiting antique markets during the 60s and 70s. Following the death of her husband, Karslake opened the Devon Doll Museum, displaying her collection of dolls, and providing a place where collectors could gather. She also provided classes to teach interested parties how to make dolls and their accessories.
An extensive collection like this would possibly be displayed in a child’s bedroom which was furnished with good quality antique bedroom furniture, often sourced at a reputable antiques dealer.
