The antiques world has been left stunned by the death of David Barby, who passed away on 25th July following a short illness.
A stalwart of Bargain Hunt, Flog It! and Antiques Road Trip, David Barby had many years’ experience as an auctioneer and valuer, with an in-depth knowledge that covered everything from Victorian ceramics to antique dining tables . To Lancashire viewers he was the ultimate haggler, able to charm sizeable discounts from even the most reluctant of vendors. His personality and charm won the hearts of all who knew him, and tributes have been pouring in from friends, fans and colleagues across the world.
One of the first to post a tribute was singer Myleene Klass, who was filming Celebrity Antiques Road Trip with David in early July, shortly before he fell ill, along with actor John Barrowman and antiques expert David Harper, who posted a photo with a message confirming his friend’s death on Facebook.
More photos of the Celebrity Road Trip shoot can be seen on the auctioneer’s website, dated 6th July. On BBC iPlayer, a Flog It! spokesperson said:
“[David’s] sense of fun, gentle personality and […] passion for antiques endeared him to the hundreds of people he worked with and millions of viewers at home.”
The tribute adds that David Barby was an ambassador for antiques TV. He was also an ambassador for antique dealers in areas like Lancashire, where there are antique chests and open bookcases at reasonable prices.
