Lancashire residents have fond memories of the 1980s American soap opera Dallas – and of the wonderfully villainous J.R Ewing, played by Larry Hagman. Now, a collection of Hagman’s personal effects – including a set of Chippendale-style Victorian balloon back dining chairs – are to be sold at auction in Beverly Hills, California.
Born in 1931, Larry Hagman is a very different character in real life to his arch nemesis JR. Happily married to his wife Maj for almost 58 years, it was she who designed and furnished their beautiful home, Heaven. This was recently put on the market – valued at $9.5 million dollars. The auction consists of fine and decorative artworks, 18th and 19th century British antique furniture, Dallas memorabilia and Western artifacts – including a magnificent Edward Bohlin parade saddle, estimated at $60,000-$80,000. The sale also includes antiques belonging to his mother, the late Mary Martin.
Larry’s career spans over 55 years, and in that time he and his wife have amassed an amazing collection of antiques and collectibles. Highlights include a drop-leaf Regency antique dining table (est $2,000 – 3,000); an ornate Italian antique cabinet, valued at $3000 – 6000, and ten Chippendale Revival Victorian dining chairs (est $3,000 – 5,000). Lancashire art enthusiasts might be interested to know paintings by several well-known contemporary artists – including Larry’s daughter, Kristina – are up for sale, as well as 18th century religious artworks.
Larry spent many years in Britain, which is no doubt where he purchased his antique balloon back dining chairs . Preston antique dealers have Victorian dining chairs and antique dining tables that will make you, too, feel like Hollywood Royalty.
